Rosa Rojas is a first-generation Dominican-American artist born and raised in the Bronx and currently based in Jersey City. Growing up the daughter of immigrant parents, she spent her youth navigating multiple cultural spheres—an experience of existing "between worlds" that has become foundational to her artistic practice. Through painting and sculpture, she documents quiet moments and transitional spaces, examining how environments continue to hold us even in our absence.
-
Rosa moves fluidly between painting and sculpture, having developed her technical foundation under the mentorship of sculptor John Belardo. Her commitment to craft led her to a specialized bronze sculpture program at New York’s Modern Art Foundry, where she learned to approach space three-dimensionally—a sensibility she now carries into her two-dimensional work. This evolution culminated in a residency in Paris where, under the guidance of the artist Callum, she expanded her practice into oil painting and developed her signature monochrome style.

By working exclusively in monochrome, Rosa strips away the emotional shorthand of color. Instead, she relies on subtler atmospheric elements: light falling across a threshold, shadows pooling in an empty corner, or the structural honesty of a wall meeting a floor. This constraint creates a palpable tension between intimacy and distance, emphasized by the absence of clear figures and the profound quiet of the scene.
